Reading together

And yesterday, my not yet eight year old picked up the first of the Percy Jackson books, and started reading. “Mamma, what is the meaning of s-p-h-i-n-x?”, he asks. Then another word, and yet another, and another. ‘He shouldn’t be reading this’, I think to myself. ‘He is so not ready for it yet.’ And yet, I cannot put my book down, and next to me, he plods on as valiantly as Percy Jackson on one of his quests. And then he chuckles, at just the right place.

An unexpected calm settles over me- we are discovering something nice together.

drabble is a story told in exactly 100 words.

People often ask me how long it takes me to prune a drabble down to exactly 100 words. "Not too long", I always say. But this one is special. I got it exactly 100, the first time I tried.

There is nothing so special as turning a child on to books. This is a wonderful drabble.

I think it's GREAT that he is going to master these--and there are totally enough jokes he will understand in the series... flatulence and sea cows that moo... There is some mythology vocabulary that will be hard, but he can!

Awwww
It always feels great to know about a child discovering the joy of books! :)
I hope my kids are book lovers too. Would love to introduce them to books, pass on my collection to them, and discover new books with them. :)

Natasha - Reading with a child and sharing a love of books is one of the most important and precious and long-lasting things you can do. How wonderful that your son is learning to love books...

Yay! Omg, Nat, that's exactly what Catherine did the other day. She picked up a "Scary Good Book," and she was laughing and brought me a passage to read. Several of the words she said wrong, and I had to explain them to her. But they're learning! :o) ((hugs))
