Catching up over lunch: day 32 of #100happydays

“I’m going to be in your part of town today”, I texted to a friend. “Think we can catch up over lunch?”
She didn’t have anything that couldn’t be re-scheduled, and an hour later, we were sitting at a cafĂ©, giggling like we would when we worked together and met everyday. What we spoke about, I don’t remember. All I know is we picked up from wherever we’d left off the last time we spoke!
It is nice to have friends with whom you can make elaborate plans to meet, but nicer still is having someone you can meet spontaneously.

Friends keep us afloat

We had been friends. Till we had a fight, and cut each other off from our lives. I distanced myself from most of our mutual friends. There had been good times, but I put them behind me. “Life is complicated enough without excess baggage”, I convinced myself. It suited me fine.

Months later, she reached out. “Can we put all that behind us, and start afresh?”
I wanted to ignore it. Her. But made me take her hand. There were no apologies, no recriminations. Just a desire to start afresh.
I am glad she reached out. Friends keep us afloat.

To expect people to change

In many relationships, there comes a time when who a person is seems no longer enough. You want them to become who you expect them to be, and if they don’t, you are disappointed.

But is that fair on the other person? Would you be willing to change, against your will, if they want you to?
Would you not grudge them the right to dictate who you are?

Why can’t we just accept people as they are? Because they matter to us only because we liked them, and if we liked them once, why should they now have to change?

Wouldn't life be incredibly boring?

How often are you disappointed, because you expect the people you love to behave exactly the way you would, and they don’t? They don’t do anything wrong- they just do not do things “your” way. And you can’t even bring yourself to tell them why you are upset, because in some irrational way, you expect them to know.
But people are not mind-readers- they cannot know what you want of them. People are not your clones- they cannot do things exactly as you would.

Nor should they.

After all, if we were all exactly alike, wouldn’t life be incredibly boring?

Best friends forever

A dear friend, a very dear friend, did something the other day that upset me. Upset me so much, I almost thought of ending the closeness, and pulling back being slightly more than mere acquaintances.
And then I thought about it. My friend did what she did because of who she is. She could not have done otherwise; that is just not her.

I can’t change my friend. But I value the friendship. Does it make sense to put our relationship in jeopardy for something I cannot control?

I called her up and spoke for long. We are still friends.

The Surprise

"You are coming for your run tomorrow, aren't you?", my friend asked.
"How can I not?"
My Saturday runs are precious, and having a birthday on Friday, was no excuse for bunking a run.

I woke up with a back-ache, but didn't want to miss my first run of the decade. I struggled during my run, but was still glad I'd made it.
When I made it back, there was music belting out, the mood was festive. "What's the occasion?", I gasped, before catching sight of the white chocolate cake.
Nothing can beat the joy of a surprise birthday party!
