On Light

Without it, our day would have much fewer hours,
Less time to work, and play. More time to sleep.

Dinner would be a constant surprise,
A concoction of unexpected ingredients.

Whatever we wish to do, we would have to do before sunset
And have no time for anything more.

We wouldn't be able to take a book to bed,
Nor knit that last line in a sock.

Everyday, we would have to wind down before dark,
Star gazing would be our only nocturnal passtime.

Of the many things we take for granted,
One of the least visible, strangely, is Light!

Last year, it was L for Lost in London

Glad Edison kept at it until he invented light!

Natasha - Light is such an important part of our lives, isn't it? In fact, as I'm sure you know, some people have seasonal affective disorder because they are so strongly affected by the shorter daylight hours during the winter.

If you want to read a stark picture of life without light, I recommend the short story Nightfall by Isaac Asimov. He later expanded the story into a novel by the same name.

We still remember the Great Blackout in 2004 when we were all suddenly plunged into a 24 no lights anywhere sitch. It was truly magical (thank god it wasn't winter).

Light is wonderful, but it also changes everything.

You've kind of described what it must feel like to be blind. No light would certainly sharpen one's other senses, but I'd prefer to have the light.

Nice post.

Sometimes I sit and think what would would happen if someone from the past visited the future that is now. How would they react to the availability of light?

It is clearly something we do not think about but take for granted. Only those born with sight and then lost it can ever understand.

Light! An amazing object that we can make last as long as we want nowadays! Wow!
I sure do appreciate this "gift" for sure!
The power goes out here all too frequently...so I love it when I push the switch...the light comes on!! Ha!

we do take it for granted... I like the idea of star gazing as a nocturnal passtime.. but things would be hard...

Not something I EVER considered... Especially because I love photography, and light is an essential part of taking pretty photos.

So many of your drabbles make me think. I love your writing so much that I featured you in my post yesterday. Hope you don't mind! http://purple-hippie.blogspot.com/2011/04/things-i-love-on-thursday-41411.html

Early to bed and early to rise? Frankly, the idea of star gazing makes it worthwhile. I remember I got hooked to it during my Calcutta days with power cuts and all.
