Get Running # 1: The Simple Joy of Running

[A lot of people have told me they can't even imagine running as much as I do. My answer to all of them is that a few years back, I couldn't run either. But now I cannot imagine not running. This is the first in a series of drabbles that would hopefully get people who do not run, but dream of running, Running!]

Four years back, I took my then three-year-old to a park to see the flowers. I pointed out the phlox and the petunia. The pansies, the poppies, the chrysanthemums and the gerberas. The flowers that I had grown up with, and loved. But he wasn't interested. All he wanted to do was RUN!

Not run with a purpose. Not run away from or run towards something. Just Run. Run, because he loved to Run.

I almost envied him. Years back, I must have run too. But I had forgotten how. And couldn't do so anymore.

Something beautiful was lost forever.

_____
drabble is a story told in exactly 100 words.

Get Running # 2 : Everyone can Run
Get Running # 3 : Start Running
Get Running # 4 : Embrace the Pain
Get Running # 5 : Keep at It
Get Running # 6 : You are A Runner

We lose so much from our childhood years as we grow up! Good for you for rediscovering part of it!

Rayna - We can learn so very much from children, can't we? Children are so alive and aware of, well, the wonder of life. Good for you to tune in to that.

Childhood inhibitions! Once in a while I still slip back into that mode.

I've never been a runner - makes me wish I was :)

This retired distance runner hears you. I miss it so much. If only I was in a different body...ok, different ankles, I could learn to live with the rest....running made me feel like I was flying and flying is power and freedom. Something sorely lacking in my present circumstances.

@ Debra - we do, don't we. Cursed are those who don't even realise it.

@ Alex - which is good enough ;-)

@ Margot - one of the saddest things to witness is the gradual fading of that sense of wonder.

@ Diane - do you (like me) ever take a ride on the swings? I try not to, because it embarasses my son, but sometimes, I can't resist.

@ Jemi - I am glad I became one. But the important think is not the running, but the bit about having something you do for the sheer joy of it.

@ Tina - I feel for you. How I feel for you. The worst thing is to not be able to do what you love because you just cannot.

@ Mary - and if you ever wanted to be a runner, and if your body cooperates, I will have you running for sure.
