My garden, or what is of it, seems to thrive on neglect. When I spend hours tending my plants, they reward me with a few stray flowers, but when I am so stressed, I often forget even to water them, they give me fruits!
The melon seeds that we threw in a pot a few months back germinated and flowered. So often has it happened in the past that I am used to it now. What came as a surprise was finding that one of those flowers got itself fertilized, and a tiny fruit to be is now making its presence felt.
Here's a picture of the flowers- aren't they rather pretty too?

oh, how completely satisfying! To see it go to fruit. I have a friend - elderly, brilliant gardener, and she has an indoor lemon tree that she's now had for several years. She harvests actual lemons! This is in snowy Canada mind!
Hmmm. I love the idea of an indoor lemon tree here in Colorado. I have a great Christmas cactus collection, but I'd never considered putting a fruit-bearing plant in that window. Must give it a try.
@ Jan - harvesting actual lemons from a plant in a pot in Canada - that is really something!!!
@ Patricia - I am talking about muggy Bombay, but fruit plants are surprisingly easy to grow - making them bear fruit is the challenge.
