Looking Out

[Yesterday was the International Day of Non-violence
To commemorate the day, here is a reminder that the only purpose violence serves is none at all.
This is a work of fiction.]

The Impetuousness of Youth. The Belief that Violence could Right a Wrong. I Picked up a Gun. Shot down Innocents in a Random Act of Violence. Witnesses Swore I was Elsewhere. The Law could pin Nothing on Me. I am Free. Free to Do Whatever I Choose.
She will Not Leave Me. Her Eyes Follow me Everywhere. Pleading with Me to Save her Child. Burning in Anger after I Gunned Him Down. From Her, there is No Escape.
She is my Jailer. I am Stuck in a Prison Cell of my own Making. Forever Looking Out. Forever Hoping for Redemption.

_____
drabble is a story told in exactly 100 words.

In October 2010, the Burrow is presenting a collection of drabbles inspired by the colours of the Spectrum. Read this Orange/ Red drabble and many, many more  exclusively at the Burrow.

Rayna - This is such a wonderful, powerful post!! You express so eloquently that violence is very destructive to the violent person, too. It really serves absolutely no purpose at all, and your post puts that better than anything else I have read lately.

First of all, that picture is so funny with the head poking out between the bars. I thought you would write something humorous but what you wrote was deep and powerful because it's so true.

Powerful. Guilt can be the greatest prison.

May peace be with you and yours!

@ Kathryn- thank you.

@ Margot- thank you. I always wondered how a man who gets off can live with the crime. But maybe I am just projecting the guilt I know I will feel on him. Though I would think not- can even the most hard hearted man not face the accusatory faces of his victims.

@ Clarissa- there is a long story behind that picture. The door is on a route I take every day to the station, and the first time I saw the man's face peeking out, I though it looked really cute. Unfortunately, I didn't have a camera, so I couldn't take the picture. Never saw the bag there again, but the first time I was there with a camera, he was peeking out, and I took the picture.
So, the picture speaks only to me of relief that a picture I wanted to take got taken.
BUT, when I wanted a picture for a post on non-violence, this seemed perfect.

@ Alex- it can, can't it? At least, for normal human beings, it is.

@ Dorte- Thank you. I bet you encounter many such characters when you write your stories.

That's one of your best ones yet, Rayna!

I am like you I could not even think about the act. Violence only brings about more violence. But most youths find that out too late. They have already been stained by it before they learn the lesson.

@ Diane - thank you so much.
Beating the legal system happens so often in India. But I wonder if the people who commit such crimes can ever get over it.

@ Pamela Jo- isn't it sad? And the misguided youth swayed into becoming terrorists. How their mothers feel, I wonder.

Powerful. And true for some until they lose their layer of humanity?

Hi Rayna... thanks for introducing me to Drabble. Its a wonderful and concise way of making a point.

Btw..I just came across your comment on my post about rejection. That too while creating labels for my older posts, I saw your comment.

Its wonderful to meet another Indian Writer and Blogger.

Hope the comment shows up.

Wonderful post! And you're so right with your message against violence.

@ Fiona - many do, I am sure. But most, I would hope are misguided youth, who then try to live productive and helpful lives.

@ Rachna- I love drabbles as a writing exercise. Unfortunately, drabbles now seem to be the only writing exercise I get.

@ Elizabeth- thank you. In India, we live so close to violence, we can't escape it.
