The Grass is Greener, even for Goddesses

Lion or Tiger? Looks more like a Horse to me.

Same Goddess. Same Demon. Same Festival. Different Mounts.

In Bengal, Durga rides a Lion. A ferocious creature who thinks nothing of sticking his sharp claws into the demon.
In Gujarat, she is astride a Tiger. An gentle animal who has learnt to pose gracefully for photographers.

The strangest thing is that the only lions found outside a zoo are in Gujarat, and Bengal is the home of the Royal Bengal Tiger.

Wouldn't it have made more sense if Durga rode a lion in Gujarat and a tiger in Bengal?

I guess even Goddesses want what is more difficult to get.

I think bengal tigers are magnificent creatures and I love to watch them stalk and catch prey. I seen one up close as a guy close to where I lives has one. I was a few feet away from it. Scary yet beautiful.

That is interesting and odd. I think it looks like a horse too.

Bit of a diva, is she? The Lady Gaga of India, making impossible backstage demands? (And I agree - it looks like a horse to me too...)

@ Stephan - that is awesome. I do so envy you. The closest I have got to one is in a zoo :-(

@ Holly- it does, doesn't it?

@ Cruella - if you are the most powerful warrior in the world, I guess you are entitled to making a few demands!

Truer words have never been said! And I mean that in the good way. We goddesses are always pushing past the easy, aren't we? ;)

Goddesses always demand a top-of-the-line ride. Always.

Oh, those goddesses! Always so high maintenance!

Have a great weekend!

Rayna - That would make more sense. Maybe the very different-ness of the animals makes them more appealing... I so much love learning about Hindu religious traditions and beliefs; your blog is a treasure trove of knowledge about so much, and your Drabbles are gems.

Goddesses and humans sure have a lot in common when it comes to desiring the rare.
I love reading this type of your drabbles.

Your drabbles are always so interesting. Maybe she rides something that is not found there to show that she is a Goddess and able to ride whatever she selects.

I didn't know there was so much story behind all the gods, that's amazing.

Now that's ironic!

Funny how God(s and goddeses) are so human. Perhaps because humans are the ones who make up the stories... As always great post!

LOVE that last line! :)

@ Barbara- quite true. Never thought of myself as a Goddess, but I guess that tag fits us better than Superwoman.

@ Debra- and why not? They deserve it.

@ Talli- aren't they just?

@ Margot- I am sure it is just that. The creature that is rare has a greater aura around it. And, thank you.

@ Karen- it is, isn't it? Love them a lot myself.

@ Mary- we all want what is harder, don't we?

@ Mason- that could be it.

@ Clarissa- there are dozens of stories behind each of them. Yes!

@ Alex- guess that is why they are Goddesses.

@ Danette- or humans mirror the behaviour of the Gods and Goddesses

@ Aleta- we do, don't we?

@ SueAnn- they can afford to be, can't they?

@ Paul- thank you. And welcome to the blog.

@ Jemi- no points for guessing which line I wrote first.
