Seeds take a long time to grow

“What are you doing?”, I asked my son.
He gave me a guilty look. “Nothing!”
“There is something”, I insisted. “Tell me, what’s in your hand?”
“This!” He had a slab of chocolate in his palm.
“What were you doing with that?”
“I was going to plant it”, he confessed. “Then it would have become a chocolate plant, and given me many chocolate fruits.”
I should have told him things didn’t really work that way; that only seeds grew into plants. But I couldn’t. “Plants take a long time to grow”, I told him. “You may have to wait long.”

That is so cute! My kids have not tried to plant things other than seeds, but they constantly try to grow seeds in my yard that will never grow. I have yet to see an apple tree in Tucson and I doubt I ever will.

One can only hope. To have the imagination of a child. Besides, I'm keeping my fingers crossed he's right. :)

So will you at some point stick a giant Hershey candy bar in the ground so he thinks it worked?

Aww...that is so cute and sweet and I love that you didn't correct him. He'll have enough time to grown cynical on his own...or not. :)

So cute; I want to know, are you going to plant some chocolate? You could show him the cacao plant online, tell him they have to roast the beans, and it is a long process. It would educate; he seems really interested!
Then start a pizza garden; plant oregano, basil and tomatoes with him and then reap what you sow.

Here is an informative link, http://www.cacaoweb.net/cocoa-chocolate.html

this is a great opportunity to get him interested in planting.
I have read and seen that kids eat better, if they help grow veggies and cook.

Chocolate is from the cocoa bean, so your son is right. Very sweet.

@ Fiona - that would be wonderful, wouldn't it? And why stop at chocolate, there are so many other things you could plant!!!

@ dipali - thank you.

@ Marjorie - so do my kids. They plant apple seeds, and even olive seeds. I am pretty sure there are no olives in India.

@ SueAnn - his gardening secret is simple. Plant a seed, water the soil, and hope for the best.

@ Yvonne - yes, I am sure he actually does expect it to grow.

@ Mason - if only faith could accomplish miracles. I'll cross my fingers too!

@ Diane - I may just end up having to do something like that, if I can't gently break it to him that only seeds grow.

@ Lisa - I agree. Enough time for cynicism and knowledge. Faith is enough for a six year old.

@ Alex - you bet I will.

@ Ellie - that's a fantastic idea. I don't have enough space for a pizza garden, but I could show him how chocolate is made. As miraculous as the seed growing into a plant.

@ Jemi - they are incredible, aren't they?

@ FantasticFiction - thanks for the visit. I'm following your site too.

@ Sonia - put that way, yes he was!
