Get Running # 4 : Embrace the Pain

If you did indeed go for a run, you would have discovered muscles you never suspected existed. If, twenty four hours after your first run, you are able to walk without wincing in pain, you are either Super(wo)man, or lying about not being a Runner.

If you are rudely woken up from a deep slumber, wouldn't you be grouchy? That's what you have done to your running muscles. The pain is necessary part of getting them working. Embrace the pain.

Work those muscles again however lightly. If you don't, you'll only have to go through the pain all over again.

"Embrace the pain" I don't know that I looked at it quite like that back in my running days.

Rayna - Interesting point about waking up muscles. They do need to almost be re-taught what to do. It's that self-discipline - putting the benefits of running ahead of the short-term discomforts - that makes us stronger, I think.

Oh this is too true.

I recently started running again but I haven't been consistent because of the cold weather.

Those unused muscles always let me know where they are! Especially when I walk up stairs!

"No pain, no gain" as they say!

My students and I have been here most of the morning, studying drabbles. We unanimously love "Boy Meets Girl". SO POWERFUL, Rayna.

I just change my workout routine and my muscles grumble!

@ Mary - if you are a regular runner (or were), the pain would have been much less. It is the muscles that are sleeping that dislike being woken up.

@ Margot- absolutely. When I think about running, I find so many writing paralles, and so many life parallels. Proves we are all interconnected, if we are in touch with ourselves.

@ Jen - inconsistency because of the cold is a good thing. You don't want to get hurt, do you.

@ Debra- absolutely. Or rather, pain as an indicator of gain.

@ Shannon- thank you. I am flattered you find material for your class here.

@ Alex- which means you are doing a good job of changing the routine. If the change were not meaningful, you would be fine.
