He demanded a rise. Pretended he had a competing job-offer, and threatened to quit if that fictitious salary was not met. The organization was looking for an excuse to fire him, so told him to take up the other offer.
Why couldn't he have let sleeping dogs lie?

Live and learn, I guess. Hard lesson though.
A hard lesson indeed. Love the photo.
Rayna - That is a wonderful 'photo! And it's so important, isn't it, to know when to keep one's mouth shut, however tempting it may be not to... I wish he'd listened to you...
That's called shooting yourself in the foot!
He should have sent more time looking into his job than into others paychecks.
Maybe he would have recognized the signs not to ask.

*sigh* With the state things are in, a job is definitely a must. Good luck to your friend.
Hi Rayna, I've just been reading your 'Running drabbles'. I've started power walking. It half kills me to run, everything flops...walking is so much better! :o) But I guess I should push myself more.
Boy! He should have for sure. Poor guy! Now he will have a tough time replacing his job! Sigh! And he thought he was being so smart.

@ Debra- absolutely. I wish he had listened, because I suspected it would happen just the way it did.
@ Fiona - thank you. I adore that photograph too. Though that dog is nowhere near as photogenic as Oscar.
@ Margot- thank you. The photograph is rather apt, isn't it?
And I suspected this would happen, but will he listen? Never.
@ Alex- quite. Why he couldn't listen, I don't know.
@ Pamela Jo - absolutely. He was not justifying his paycheck, and even if he felt he was not the only one, that doesn't mean he could demand more.
@ Oddyoddyo13- precisely. And for him, with his qualifications, it is going to be really hard to get another one.
@ Niki- I am glad you have started power walking. Power walking to running is only a journey of a few weeks, if you want to take the journey, that is.
@ SueAnn- absolutely. The worst possible time in which to look for a new job.
