Get Running # 3 : Start Running

[People often tell me they would love to run, but can't. This is the third in a series of drabbles which, I hope, will get at least a couple of people who think they can't run, running.]

There is only one way to start running- Start Running!
Slip on your most comfortable trainers, walk for five minutes, take a deep breath, and start running. Pick a speed not too much more than your walking speed, and run.
Let your mind wander out of your body and observe you running. Marvel at how your hands and legs remember exactly what to do. Keep running as long as you can.

If you last 20 minutes, you are already a runner. If 2 minutes is all you can do, you are exactly where I was five months before my first half-marathon.

_____
A drabble is a story told in exactly 100 words.

Get Running # 1 : The Simple Joy of Running
Get Running # 2 : Everyone can Run
Get Running # 4 : Embrace the Pain
Get Running # 5 : Keep at It
Get Running # 6 : You are A Runner

Five months ago, no more than 2 minutes. Okay, that does give me hope!

Rayna - It's all about that all-important first step, isn't it? Just put those trainers on and do it. Such a wonderful metaphor for life, too - thank you :-) for the wisdom.

Oi! I need this so much... and I am not sure my back, knees or ankles can manage, but i think you may have set me to investigating it...

Great series. It seems to be inspiring a lot of people. I've had to switch to walking but that works for me also.

Inspirational! I can do only a few minutes, myself--but maybe I can build on it.

Working on it! Running is much harder-and much more fun-than I anticipated! Thanks for the motivation. :)

I love running, but it doesn't love me... every time I start running regularly, my legs cheat and give out. Last year it was the knees, this year it's the knees plus an inflammation of the muscles in the lower legs. I am not giving up, though!

Really? I can start with two minutes a day. Sometimes we think we have to start at the highest level but starting slow is key.

@ Barbara - I did make that journey- no reason why others cannot.

@ Rama - it is, isn't it?

@ Debra - knees and back permitting, I will have you running, I promise.

@ Margot - absolutely. Almost everything is a life lesson, isn't it?

@ Hart - you my dear are a runner. You shouldn't be reading this.

@ Mary - walking, running. Whatever suits you.

@ Elizabeth - a couple of minutes is all you need to start with.

@ Oddyoddyo13 - it is, it is. It gets easier as you start banking the miles, but it never gets less fun.

@ Diandra - I am definitely not a sports medicine person, so will not comment on that at all. Just hope you are able to cheat the body this time.

@ SueAnn- you walk, don't you? You can easily graduate to the next step, whether it be running or power walking.

@ Clarissa - absolutley not. You actually start with one minute, not even two.
