Memories are made of these

My first Diwali away from home. Most of my classmates had gone back home, the few of us left behind tried desperately to capture the atmosphere of the festival on campus. A massive rangoli made with coloured powder at the centre of the open-air plaza. A thousand earthen lamps lining three stories of balconies enclosing the plaza- each a flickering point of light dispelling the gloom. It seemed like Louis Kahn had designed the campus with us in mind.

It was Diwali as I have never known it. And the start of my love affair with rangolis and earthen lamps.

Rayna - I wish you and your family a wonderful Diwali :-). And thanks for sharing this story. That just shows that when people reach out and celebrate together, it doesn't have to matter where the celebration takes place. Really, it takes place in the heart.

Happy Diwali to you! I had a similar experience when I was in college-- Thanksgiving on campus- it is strange and fun all at once to find your own way to celebrate a holiday your parents have always defined for you. Part of growing up.

OMG I don't remember this at all, but I do remember extra sweets in the dining hall, thus proving that my priorities haven't changed with time. Btw, do you have any pictures of Diwali from then?
