I grew up in a house set in a huge garden maintained by an army of gardeners. Among the formal lawns, rose gardens and rock gardens, the solitary shrub of lantana was a weed. Quite definitely a weed.
The flowers were pretty, the berries were cute. I loved crushing the leaves, and catching the dragonflies that flocked to it. But I was taught not to appreciate it, because it was a weed, not a plant.
A couple of months back, nostalgia drove me to bring home three lantana plants. Who cares if it is a weed- even weeds are beautiful!
A drabble is a story told in exactly 100 words.

That weed is beautiful along with dandelions. I wish I knew what made the people decided what is a weed and what is not.

I've paid good money for my lantana (and cover it carefully for winter so it'll come back the next year), so I hope it's not a weed! :) I know it could be...but here in the South it's so darned hot that only weeds survive, sometimes.

Just like here, Queen Anne's Lace is a weed and yet such a beautiful flower. I have them in my garden!!!

what I wouldn't give for your army of gardners! :D We have lantana all over the place here, too. I've seen it in all colors--have you seen the kind that's pink, purple AND yellow all on one bush? even weeds can be beautiful~ :o)

Have you ever wondered who gets to decide what one is a weed and what one a precious flower? I do and I think someone is just making this stuff up and should stop already. It is a weed if you don't want it and a flower if you do. there. simple. I wish all the dumb fountaining petunias would be classed weeds and that everyone would grow helpful clover, daisies and queen anne's lace in their gardens.

If I think it's beautiful and I like it, in my yard it's a flower. If I don't like it it's a weed.

Well, silly me then. I paid $20 at the nursery for a Lantana.
I believe weeds are in the eyes of the beholder, echoing what some other comments say. That's a great plant, in my opinion.
I agree - it's beautiful. I never quite understood why some of the more beautiful weeds were so bad - but I guess they tend to take over and kill other plants? I wouldn't no, I'm no expert.

One gardeners weed is an other gardeners treasure. I know a lot of people who use lantana in their gardens as accent plants. The nurseries around here sell them like crazy.
Lantana is a plant in the Americas, is it? Good to know that because it is too pretty to be a weed. But so are dandelions, and Queen Anne's lace (Queen Anne's lace is used a lot in bouquets in India).
I wish people would classify plants as hardy and delicate, rather than weed and plant- makes so much more sense.
