The Pieta

As a piece of sculpture, Michelangelo's Pieta is all wrong. Of the two people it depicts, the face of one is not visible, the other looks a couple of decades younger than she actually is. The proportions do not quite make sense- a real man could not have fitted onto a woman's lap in quite the way he does. But, the Pieta is also the single most beautiful piece of religious sculpture I have seen.

Most of the time, you have to follow the rules. But sometimes, you have to just follow your heart.... after making peace with the rules.

I saw this Pieta two years ago while visiting Italy, and I'm taking my kids next year to see it...so your story caught my attention!

As you said, the proportions may be wrong - but it is still a beautiful piece of art.

I would love to see this in person. It has been my favorite piece of sculpture since I first saw it - over 40 years ago at university.

And it's a beautiful peice of work regardless.

I read once that if the Pieta Madonna stood up, she would be eight feet tall. But that disproportionality is not really visible unless you think about it, is it? Her placid Zen Buddha expression also puzzled me when I was young.

Natasha - That goes for just about anything in life. You have to understand what the rules are.... and when something is more important than rules...

I think its beauty and pathos hit me even more after I had my kids. Her emotions at that point are unbearable even to imagine:(
