My girlie gang

I have my girlie gang. We had been in school together, lost touch, found each other through Facebook. We had been apprehensive before our first lunch, but ended up really bonding. We meet often- swap stories, gossip, give each other advice. We are friends.

A month back, I met another schoolmate. She is nice, sincere and passionate about a cause I believe in. She is someone I know I can trust, but I know I wouldn’t go out of my way to meet her.

For a long time, I wondered why. The answer came suddenly- she doesn’t make me laugh.

I had a similar experience. During last year, I found a bunch of my high school class mates through Facebook. We've been out several times since then, and it's a joy because we have such fun remembering the old days. And yeah, it's a lot easier being around people who can keep a smile on your face.

Yes, the humourless are hard to take after a while.

I'm terrified to meet friends I went to school with because I'm such a different person now. I've recently read a facebook page of a friend from my high school and we just don't connect anymore.

By the way, one of the countries I would love to travel to one day is India.

I've also reconnected with friends from school through Facebook. It's interesting, but I've discovered for the most part the only thing we really have in common are those years together. "Remember when" gets dull after a while. However, shared memories are also comforting.

It's great to reunite with friends who really "get" you after all that time.
I'm glad it went well!

Yayy! Girlie gangs are the best. I completely relate to the humorless friend part!

Nice you've reconnected. I've found most of my friends from school took very different paths than me and we have nothing in common anymore.

Love this insight! I'm going to have to use this metric to see what it explains, but I suspect it is quite a lot. It may be why I feel so much more socially competent in writing... My brain is too slow to be funny in person, but my wit works alright if I have a minute to let it warm up...

Reading all your comments about how many of you found friends from school, but had nothing in common with them except shared memories, I can only be thankful for the fact that in these ex-classmates, I found soulmates. We are friends, and shared memories rarely come into play when we meet.

@ Yvonne- thank you.

@ Joy - it is nice to find people you lost, and then find that you still get along well with them, isn't it?

@ Debra - I guess the older I get the less time I want to waste doing things I don't enjoy. And much as I respect people for various reasons, the people I want to spend time with are people who make me happy.

@ Clarissa - I too have changed a lot since school, and my friends have changed a lot too. On the face of it, we have very little in common except a shared past. Except, we have evolved into very similar women, despite the different life choices.

@ Elspeth - that is sad. I was very apprehensive about our first meeting, becasue I did not particularly want to get into those "Remember when" stories. Strangely, we just clicked as a group, and now the shared memories are no longer what keeps us together.

@ Lydia - it is am amazing thing when that happens!

@ Saumya - strangely, I appreciate girl friends much more now than I ever did. Guess I had to become a mother before I could do it.

@ Alex - like I said, so did all of us, but we found that we ended up having very similar cores. I guess I was just lucky.

@ Tami - it came to me very suddenly, and looking back, I realise it is true of many of my social interactions. And yes, I too connect much more virtually than in real life.

@ Barbara - :-)

@ Southpaw - you said it!!!

@ SueAnn - it is a treasure, isn't it?

@ Elizabeth - when that happens, it can be great. And for all you know, you may not have been best friends if you hadn't lost each other before refinding.

Sorry, about the one that didn't make you laugh; YOU look great with your group of girlies!

oh I like this. Nostalgia isn't enough to make a true friendship. One needs laughter for sure because we laugh when we're safe. Tears are good too for the same reason. Friends are the best remedy for any ills.

Natasha said...

@ Faith- yes, we laugh at the strangest things. Even ones nobody would laugh about.

@ Ellie - and the laughter is very schoolgirlish too, in that we seem to giggle all the time.

@ Jan - nostalgia is good for a bit, but only for a bit. You need to laugh, and cry, and trust.

This story is so cool. Girlie gangs are great for all ages and all cultures, I think. I connected with two girls from grade (grammar) school -- we were 14 when we finally lost touch and 65 when we reconnected. I only see them twice a year, but it's always fun.

@ Patricia - that is amazing. I thought meeting after 20 years was a lot, but you met after half a century! And so glad you are still friends.
