Basic kindness

It was pouring. The roads were waterlogged. Trains were running late. Umbrellas were tangling up.

The lady in front of me collided with someone, stumbled and nearly fell. ‘Can’t she see where she is going”, I thought, before noticing the white cane in her hand. She could not see.

I took her hand and guided her to where she wanted to go.

“I can’t thank you enough”, she said.” I can only bless you.”
“Anyone would have done it”, I muttered, embarassed.
“Very few do”, she replied.

I am still angry. Angry that basic kindness cannot be taken for granted.

What a picture!

Sad that she doesn't meet with more kindness, but good that she met YOU.

How nice that you stopped to help her! God bless you!

What a beautiful post!

The drabble is a fascinating concept. I may have to try one some day. Usually I am FAR too wordy! :)

Thanks for popping out of hiding and reminding me to come visit you! I like your new blog look!

Very kind of you and definitely true that this world is far short on simple kindness! My prayer is that this returns to you one hundred fold Rayna!

God bless you!

I am so glad you even noticed her and her plight!! You are so right...many don't even notice or wouldn't take the time if they did.

Love the Drabble!

Simple kindness is all too rare. Otherwise we would not have so much work to do with those who are disadvantaged.

I remember falling in the middle of the street in NY many years ago, bloodying my knee. It was crowded. No one said anything to see if I was okay. I had wiped out.
I wish people were more kind, like you.

I love your descriptions, and am warmed to read your part in bringing kindness.

@ Sherrie- it is really sad that something that should be taken for granted cannot be.

@ Fiona - the picture was taken last year, but is typical!
Had she not said what she said, I would have shrugged my shoulders and said that if it hadn't been me, it would have been someone else.

@ Doli - when I was a mother lugging two kids around, I have encountered so much kindness, I couldn't have done anything else.

@ Beth - thank you. And you really should try drabbling- they can get addictive.

@ Alex - thank you. This particular one was 178 words long when I wrote it. A lot of things I thought essential had to go, but I am glad I managed a week of drabbles!

@ Clarissa- frankly, I didn't even think of it, and thought anyone would have done the same thing in my place.

@ Yvonne - I wish it went further, though.

@ Susan - thank you. A drabble is very powerful.

@ Trudy- thank you, but what I would really like is that with every act of kindness, the amount of kindness increases hundredfold- that would be so much better, wouldn't it?

@ SueAnn - isn't that sad. Like someone said a couple of days back, there is nothing as powerful as kindness.

@ Al - so true. We are not even talking about big stuff. Just some basic empathy would make the world a much nicer place to be in.

@ Lydia - isn't that sad? Strangely, I have had so much spontaneous kindness shown to me, I can't even imagine people saying there is not enough kindness in the world. But I guess you and that lady know better.

@ Faith- tell me honestly, would you have done any differently? Unless you were loaded down with more kids than you could handle.
