I'm not a Writer

Over the last few days, I have got more than half a dozen invites on Facebook, asking me to confirm that I am indeed a "Writer". Much as it pains me to do so, I rejected all of them. Because, whether I want to admit it to myself or not, I am currently not a writer.

Yes, I love writing. Yes, the stories are there in my head. Yes, someday I hope to write something people would want to read.

But today, I am not writing, so I cannot call myself a writer. A friend of writers, I'll call myself.

_____
drabble is a story told in exactly 100 words.

Not being a writer doesn't mean I can't write about writing. After an insanely long break, I am blogging at Burrowers, Books and Balderdash, on Local Flavour: how much is too much?

Here's one thing I believe. A writer is not a product, but a soul. A writer isn't something we do, but something that was born in us. If you are a writer, you just are. never mind if you aren't writing yet. :)

Natasha - I've read your blog. I've read your poetry. I've read your stories. I've read your comments, too. You are a writer. You are also a friend of writers, but you are a writer.

@ Tabita- True. I keep telling people that they become runners the day they decide to call themselves runners. Wonder why I find it so difficult to call myself a writer now?

@ Margot - thank you for the vote of confidence. I know I can write, but I am not sure if right now, I can call myself a writer. Maybe not calling myself one is my way of incentivising myself to start writing?

Of course you are a writer. What are you talking about??

Rayna, you are a master writer!

You are too. You may not be making time for it now--your life is crazy and you have your running thing which, as obsessions go, allows no others. You will get back to writing. (I hope sooner than later, but maybe think about what I did--as each kid gives up reading time, fill it in with some bonding with your notebook)

Rayna you don't have to call yourself a writer. We will do it for you.

Natasha - when you say you aren't a writer - we all get afeared. Maybe we aren't writers either...after all, many of us don't write as diligently as we'd wish. Because I know you are a bodhisattva, you will, I'm certain, tell us in no uncertain terms that you've given the topic some thought and realized that, yes, you are a writer. love ya kid.

How can you say that? You are very much so a writer--you just wrote that up there!

but I hear you about actually calling yourself that. I still have a hard time telling others I'm trying to get a novel published. It seems so... hmm. Incredible? Silly? Cock-eyededly optimistic? :D ((hugs))

I haven't stopped by in ages and thought I would today. I would say you're a writer, since you've been blogging for a long time and are consistent.

You write, and you write well for that matter, and either way I consider you a writer.

We are just glad you are back Rayna. And for my money you are a terrific writer. What you can say in a hundred words is always inspiring.

Whether or not you have time to put pen to paper or fingers to keyboard, you are a writer. With these gentle words alone, you touched all of us enough to react. If that isn't what isn't what a true writer does, then I'm a tad fuzzy on the definition of "writer". :)

You offer so much inspiration in so few words, in my heart you are a writer as well as a "friend of writers."
