My spice rack

Thirty-seven. That’s the total number of bottles in my kitchen containing spices, herbs and assorted condiments. There are cinnamon sticks, powdered cinnamon, and a spice mix containing cinnamon. There is fresh oregano in a pot, dried oregano for pastas and oregano flakes to sprinkle on pizzas. There is nutmeg and fenugreek. Sesame seeds and nigella. And they are used fairly regularly.

 A year back, my spice rack contained just six powders- turmeric, chilli, cumin, coriander, dry mango, and mixed spices- and I never felt the need for anything else. It’s amazing how little time you require to develop a passion.

Live their Passion

When I look at some of my friends, I am amazed at how much they manage to cram into a single day.

Ultra marathoner. Classical Dancer. Baker. Sports Nutritionist. Mother.

Professional Baker. Environmentalist. Gardener. Mother.

Fiction writer. Content Creator. Professional Dancer. Mother.

Bio-tech entrepreneur. Photographer. Wildlife enthusiast.

Doing any of those things is a full-time job, but not only do they straddle multiple roles, they do it well. The one thing they all have in common is Passion. Passion for doing what they are doing. The determination to live their Passion. If you have Passion, the rest falls into place.

Remember who you are

She is a person I admire tremendously. A graduate from a top management institute, she had an enviable corporate career ahead of her. Instead, she chucked it all and returned to her first love- Experimental Physics.

When I congratulated her after she received an important Award, and told her why I admire her so, her response was surprising. “I’m so glad you reminded me of all that”, she said. “I’d forgotten who I once was. Now that I remember, it will be so much easier for me to make difficult choices again.”

Why do we forget who we really are?

Never Outrun your Joy

I was determined to run 20 miles that day. The first couple of miles are always difficult, and I braced myself and weathered those. But even after I found my rhythm, the run did not become any easier. “Why am I doing this?”, I asked myself repeatedly. “Running is supposed to be fun, not a task to be completed.” Me being me, I could not bring myself to quit, but as I struggled through those last miles, I promised myself that if running was becoming a drag, I wouldn’t run anymore.

And the same holds for everything else, doesn’t it?

Follow your passion

When I look at some of the people around me, I am amazed. The banker who’s taking her passion for food to a new level by starting a gourmet food catering business. The full-time mommy (and runner) who’s just qualified as a sports nutritionist. The engineer who is a full-time fitness instructor. The software engineer who makes and sells jewellery.

A bunch of women who apparently have nothing in common except the fact that they all chose to move away from conventional career paths and explore unchartered trails. You don’t have to wait till you retire before following your passion.
