Separate Issues from Personalities

“God does not play dice.”
“Stop telling God what to do.”
Even people who do not know what Albert Einstein and Niels Bohr were arguing about have heard of this famous exchange. Einstein could never quite reconcile himself to Quantum Mechanics as articulated by Bohr, even though (ironically) it was his work that led to it.
Till the end of their days, Einstein and Bohr argued about Nature’s Laws- neither willing to give in to the other. Yet, they continued to have the highest regard for each other.

Why do we find it so difficult to separate issues from personalities?
Today's google doodle commemorates what would have been the 127th birthday of Niels Bohr.

“An expert is a person who has made all the mistakes
that can be made in a very narrow field.”

This is the fourth year that I am going to be a part of NaBloWriM. The Plan is to elaborate (in 100 words) on a quote that touched my heart- let's see how far this takes me. If I can tie it in with the writing prompt, so much the better!

And be Inspired

Citius, Altius, Fortius.

Men and women who go beyond the realm of imagination. Who push themselves to the limit. Who prove that impossible is only just a word.
Talent yes. But years of hard-work. Of persistence. Of single minded dedication. Of dreaming a dream, and making it come true- or not.
Whether they win medals or our hearts, or both, the Olympians are a special breed. They are heros, and teach us that we can be too.

I no longer let my kids watch television, but the Olympics is another thing. They can watch all they want. And be inspired.

International Woman's Day

We are the lucky ones. We may struggle fit into one day all that we are required to, but we know Choice. We may complain and crib (mostly with reason), but we do have a voice that is heard.

Many others are not as lucky. Because of their gender, they are killed even before they can be born, or allowed to die before they reach early childhood. They are deprived of basic needs, and treated as little more than a commodity in a male dominated society.

For them, and for us; purple for dignity, white for purity, green for hope.

Happy Woman's Day

Carpe diem

“Today is the day the comes only once in four years”, read the Facebook status updates of so many of my friends. “Do something special today.”
One attempted to run 29 kilometers, and was disappointed at having to give up after 20. Another cooked an elaborate three course lunch, which did not come out the way it was meant to.
Me? I chose to keep it as just another day, with normal pleasures. Swimming in an empty pool, making a fruit-salad with the kids, seeing how far paper planes can go.

Carpe diem. Seize the day, but do it everyday.

Shouldn't books be read???

The other day, someone was holding forth on a recent bestseller, and his views were so opposed to mine that I chose to interject. Soon, however, it became apparent that the parts that I reacted to most strongly, didn’t seem to have registered with him. A little bit of prodding, and the person was forced to admit that all he had actually downloaded and read was the synopsis and a review of the book.
I can never understand what drives a person to do that. Shouldn’t reading a book be an experience, beyond just knowing the plot of the story?

And yesterday, Google celebrated the 200th Birth Anniversary of Charles Dickens

Happy Birthday, Google

“Mamma, just google it, will you”, said my older one in exasperation, when I insisted I didn’t know how many volcanoes there were in the world.

Google!!! Till a few years back, the word didn’t even exist in my lexicon, and now Google’s become so much a part of my life, I sometimes feel I should set a place for Google at the dinner table.

When I was a kid, I depended on often out-dated encyclopaedias for information; my kids need only to “google it” out using my phone.

But now that’s Google’s a teen, will he continue to behave?

Happy 13th Birthday, Google

Happy Birthday, Cezanne

Strolling through the Museum of Art, Sao Paulo was a unique experience for someone who knew her Impressionists intimately, but only through reproductions. The Renoirs were exquisitely beautiful, the Toulouse-Lautrecs looked like Toulouse-Lautrecs, and the Cezannes were HUGE.

The third Cezanne grabbed at me. Once my eyes fell on it, I could not peel them away. I wandered away, but always returned to gaze at it. I stared at it from every angle; I stared for hours. I couldn't have enough of it.

The name was in Portuguese. I could never find the painting again. I cannot ever forget it.
