Bamboo shoots

"What's that?", asked the four-year old while I was looking for a container to temporarily park my bamboo shoots in.
"Bamboo shoots", I replied. He had grow up with them, and really had no reason to ask.

"Are you going to send it to China?", he asked.
"Why should I?" I was genuinely perplexed. He may not share my avarice for plants, but he's normally willing to co-exist with them.
"Because teacher says pandas eat only bamboo, and because there are not enough bamboo trees in China, the pandas will all go hungry and die."

For once, I was speechless.

A drabble is a story told in exactly 100 words.

Nearly a year back, I had blogged about how I had accepted that the vase containing my bamboo shoots would be broken one day. I am happy to say that it has not departed for its heavenly abode just yet.

  3. I hate it when our children are smarter than us. My son is extremely bright and he's always correcting me on things. But, it's heartwarming at the same time.

  7. Knowing you (and knowing him a little bit too) I am not surprised at his generosity. Maybe he'll grow up to save the pandas?

In the meantime I am glad for you that your vase isn't broken :)

  9. So sweet. This reminds me of my sister's story where a friend of hers took her kids Christmas shopping for foster children in Africa and she sent each child off to pick something and while all the older kids came back with dolls and whatnot, her youngest came back with a fly swatter.

It's amazing what enters into their psyches. B

  14. Kids sure have their own way of looking at things. And yes, they mostly leave us speechless.

  17. I am so glad your bamboo is alive and well...Mine died. And they told me it was practically impossible to kill bamboo. Karma? I hope not.

  18. Smart boy, compassion and kind! Love this! Children are a lot more aware, then we give them credit for.

  20. @ Debra- he does, doesn't he?

@ Alex- extremely. I was quite impressed.

@ Tina- they do, don't they? The connections they make!

@ Clarissa- it is nice, but it can be become a bit much. Normally, when my older one gets too obnoxious, I sit on him!

@ Karen- he is a dear, isn't he?

@ Trudy- his heart is in the right place for sure

@ Leigh- should we swap for a couple of days?
And if the pandas are hungry enough, they can pay us a visit

@ Diane- they can come to dinner fi they like

@ Cruella- I would love it if he does something like that. And yes, I do like the vase, for all that I have accepted it is broken

    @ Jules- thank you.

@ Barbara- what an amazingly smart kid. That is a great gift actually.

@ Patricia- I am much impressed!

@ Hart- and the connections they draw!

@ Jemi- they do, don't they?

@ Jaycee- he did. And applied it at home- am proud of him

@ Mary- they are amazing that way.

@ Stephen- maybe the pandas are better at disguise than you give them credit for?

@ Jane- he is. Actually, both of them are- but different gems. As are almost all kids.

@ Drama Queen- you have to line it with stones, and keep only a couple of inches of water in the vase.

@ Ellie- they are quite amazing, actually

@ Fiona - I never thought the vase would survive as long as it actually has!

    @ Alex- thank you.
